An article about how important it is to allow children to play and move... Recesses are important too!
This article talks about how an undeveloped vestibular system can cause difficulty with sensory processing, leading to in attentiveness in school.

Is handwriting important? Here's an article that supports that it is. By copying letters, more neural circuitry is activated in the brain. The theory is that learning to write, rather than use a keyboard, improves long term educational results.

Lots of kids with Learning Disorders, ADHD and other Sensory Processing problems, struggle to succeed - and often fail. While it breaks a parents heart to see a child fail, failing is an important part of learning. What a parent can do when a child fails is provide support and encouragement to keep trying. Help the child frame the failure in terms of a way to learn and grow.

(After 5 years in KL, I've finally figured out how to get to Central Market, Mid Valley and the KLCC. Trust me, I failed many times and spent many hours in the car, but I got it and the success of that felt great! Same holds true for our kids.)

Check the link below for inspiration from famous "failures."

Lots of kids with Learning issues have difficulty with gluten. If you are trying to go gluten free,  check out this FB link for a gluten free recipe for banana muffins - courtesy of Martha Stewart.

Interesting article here from the New York Times that discusses alternatives to using medications for treating ADHD and other attention problems. These alternatives, such as meditation, involve mental exercises to manage distracting thoughts:

"Research suggests meditation and mental exercises may be better than drugs at helping people cope with attention problems."

This Learning Awareness Blog is for people who have kids with learning issues. By learning issues, I mean problems like Learning Disorders (aka Learning Disabilites), ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorders, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other Developmental issues. Our kids, these kids, with learning issues, are smart and talented. They are absolutely great kids ....well most of the time ; ) ..... Despite their many assets, they tend to have trouble in school. Maybe they don't struggle with all subjects - it could be a specific subject like math or writing..... It could be they are disorganized and always forgetting to bring in their homework or their work is very messy..... It could be they have trouble staying focused .... I could go on but I think you are getting the general idea. So ... my intention here is to have a place to discuss issues and provide information.

Currently I am living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I am a Clinical Psychologist although I am not currently  practicing. And I have a kid with a learning disorder. And I've got a bit of experience with academic problems.

So please bear with me while I try to figure out this blog thing and hopefully we can all help each other : ))
